Cordless power tools used to get a lot of bad press due to weedy torque and pathetic battery life. The problem is that cordless tools have moved on but many "old timers" haven't caught up. This is a crying shame, because cordless power tools have some very important safety benefits, which could prevent you or your loved ones getting hurt or worse.
Safety Benefit 1 Electrical Safety Cordless angle grinders and drills etc use battery power which means you are totally disconnected from the mains. Once again cordless tools come up trumps by totally removing the chance of an electric shock due to a short-circuit etc.
Cordless Angle Drill
An additional benefit related to electrical safety is that you don't have a long lead which could potentially be damaged by foot fall or vehicles driving over it. The only lead you have is the recharger which is short and can stay safe back at base.
Safety Benefit 2 Removing the Trip Hazard Cordless tools by their very nature are "cordless" which means following the first principle of risk assessment they totally remove the risk of tripping over a power flex. Or being pulled off a ladder while using your drill driver when someone trips over your power cord; can you see how using a cordless drill driver totally removes this possibility. For more on preventing trips and slips see the UK HSE documents Slips and Trips.
Some so called "tough guys" will scoff at the importance I'm putting on avoiding trips - but trips and falls cause hundreds if not thousands of injuries and even deaths in households and workplaces across the world. Cordless power tools totally remove this hazard and that's without getting into the benefits of being able to operate anywhere without needing to be near a power supply.
Safety Benefit 3 Ergonomics and manual handling Modern ergonomic design means that modern cordless tools are comfortable and easy to handle, they may be a little heavier due to the battery but this is offset by the fact you're not having to waste times wrestling with a power and constantly worrying about chopping or damaging it.
So there you have it from me and the HSE - I've given you 3 compelling safety reasons for using cordless tools and the HSE are suggesting cordless tools to, how much more do you need?
Have fun, and be safe...
Tom.
